MIPS est l'abréviation de Millions d'Instructions Par Seconde. C'est une façon de mesurer la vitesse de traitement d'un programme par un microprocesseur. Comme la plupart des unités de ce type, on l'utilise le plus souvent abusivement (il est très difficile de comparer correctement les vitesses exprimées en MIPS de différents types de microprocesseurs).
Les BogoMips sont une invention de Linus. Le noyau (ou peut-être un pilote de périphériques ?) a besoin d'une boucle d'attente (le temps d'attente est trop court ou requiert une trop grande précision pour utiliser une autre méthode qu'une attente active) qu'il est nécessaire de calibrer en fonction de la vitesse du processeur sur lequel Linux s'exécute. Ainsi le noyau mesure lors du démarrage la vitesse d'exécution d'une boucle d'instructions déterminée. Bogo vient de l'américain bogus, qui signifie faux, bidon. Une vitesse en BogoMips donne donc une indication de la vitesse d'un microprocesseur, mais l'unité est définie trop peu scientifiquement pour que l'on puisse l'appeler autrement qu'un BogoMips.
Les raisons (il y en a deux) pour lesquelles la mesure de cette vitesse est affichée lors du démarrage du noyau sont :
L'algorithme C qui calcule le nombre de BogoMips se trouve dans le
fichier source /usr/src/linux/init/main.c
, et c'est la
variable du noyau associée loops_per_sec
(boucles par
seconde) qui est utilisée par de nombreux pilotes pour des besoins
plus concrets. La fonction d'attente à proprement parler udelay()
est
en assembleur, c'est pourquoi chaque portage en a sa propre définition dans
/include/asm/delay.h
.

Nous remarquerons que la boucle de détermination de la vitesse en BogoMips n'est pas optimisée pour le parallélisme des différents processeurs comme le Pentium d'Intel ou l'Alpha 21164.

Il y a trois façons de connaître la vitesse effective en BogoMips de votre système Linux :

[...] "Bogomips" est un programme indépendant qui affiche les performances de votre système basé sur l'un des benchmarks les plus utilisés au monde. Il exécute le même code que celui utilisé lors du démarrage du noyau Linux, mais est disponible comme un programme utilisateur. [...] La version 1.3 de BogoMips est maintenant portable et devrait fonctionner sur tout système qui dispose du compilateur et des librairies ANSI C.
Remarquons que, du fait de la charge du système, les valeurs calculées par le programme BogoMips peuvent être inférieures à celles que vous trouverez plus loin. Cela est dû au fait que la version indépendante ne peut donner exactement la même information qu'au démarrage, car les autres processus actifs seront en compétition avec ce programme, lancé par un utilisateur ordinaire, pour l'obtention des ressources système. C'est pourquoi seuls les scores en BogoMips affichés au boot sont reportés plus loin.

La boucle de calcul des BogoMips est quantifiée, et l'on obtient donc généralement le même nombre chaque fois. On obtiendra des valeurs différentes si la vitesse calculée est à la limite d'un intervalle de quantification, et qu'il y a de petites variations (différences dans le temps de traitement des interruptions), provoquant le passage d'une valeur à une autre.
Si un noyau n'est pas compilé de façon spécifique pour un processeur donné, alors des variations (parfois grandes) des scores en BogoMips peuvent apparaître, principalement en raison d'erreurs d'alignement. Ce problème ne survient apparemment que sur les différents processeurs x86 (Intel et clones). Heureusement, il peut facilement être résolu : recompiler le noyau spécifiquement pour votre processeur.
L'algorithme BogoMips, contrairement à ce que beaucoup de monde croit, ne change pas de façon significative selon les différentes versions du noyau.

Elle n'a pas échoué. Si elle avait échoué, vous auriez eu le message suivant :

En revanche, c'est l'initialisation du pilote d'un gadget que vous n'avez pas sur votre machine qui est susceptible d'avoir échoué. Juste après le calcul du nombre de BogoMips, les différents pilotes sont initialisés. Tout échec est bêtement indiqué. Un exemple classique est celui du pilote de l'AHA152x. Les autres symptômes d'échec de pilotes (et non d'échec dans le calcul des BogoMips) sont des plantages système, des attentes longues ou des blocages complets du système.
Depuis Linux 1.2, les messages d'erreurs ont été largement améliorés. Mettez à jour votre système avec au moins cette version pour déterminer quel est le pilote qui plante.
Les processeurs Cyrix du type 486 nécessitent un programme d'activation du cache, appelé quelquefois programme BogoBoost. On peut radicalement améliorer le nombre de BogoMips des processeurs Cyrix 5x86 et 6x86 en utilisant la prédiction de branchement (option du BIOS). Cette amélioration est parfois relativement faible. Il existe plusieurs paquetages permettant d'ajuster les processeurs Cyrix, comme le correcteur (patch) BogoBoost, cx5x86mod et set6x86, tous disponibles dans les archives habituelles. Certains indiquent que l'on obtient de meilleures performances avec les Cyrix 6x86 quand le noyau est compilé avec une optimisation pour 486 plutôt qu'une optimisation pour Pentium.
Les performances des processeurs NexGen 386 améliorés, référencés Nx586, sont données avec celles des 386, car le fait qu'ils fonctionnent comme des Pentium est sans incidence sur le mode de calcul des BogoMips.
Les AMD 5x86, aussi référencés sous le nom AMD 486DX5, sont des 486/33 quadruplés. Ils sont donc recensés avec les autres 486. Les AMD K5 et K6 sont des processeurs de type Pentium, avec leurs constantes propres pour la détermination du nombre de BogoMips.
Précisons qu'il n'y a que deux raisons de faire attention au nombre de BogoMips annoncé lors du démarrage de Linux :

Le tableau suivant donne des mesures de vitesse en BogoMips pour différents systèmes (plus de 1000 entrées par plus de 800 personnes différentes provenant de près de 50 pays). Notez que les valeurs indiquées ici sont celles obtenues lors du démarrage, sauf pour la section portant sur les systèmes autres que Linux.
